Evangelism

Evangelism is sharing the gospel (good news) message of Jesus Christ with those who do not believe,
calling them to repent of their sins and become followers of Jesus.
Jesus commands that all believers preach the gospel in Matthew 28:19-20, known as the Great Commission:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Christians can accomplish personal evangelism to people they come in contact with everyday
(family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.) with not only words but actions - reflecting Christ in their lives.
The church accomplishes the spread of Christianity through world-wide missions; the work of missionaries.

"A summary of what Christ aims to do through you and me when we testify to the truth of the gospel.
He aims to open the eyes of the spiritually blind; he aims that they would then turn from the darkness
of sin to the light of righteousness; he aims that they would turn from the power of Satan
who can only hold them by lies, and come to God.
He aims that all their sins be forgiven.
And he aims that by faith, not legalistic burdens, they would join the saints in the pursuit of holiness.
O what great, eternal things God aims to do through us as we go and tell about the truth of Jesus Christ."
- John Piper

What is Evangelism?
Strange as it may seem, there are church leaders who do not have the foggiest notion
as to the answer to that question.
D. T. Niles in his book, " The Preacher's Task and the Stone of Stumbling writes
that it is not the responsibility of Christians to confront those outside of Christ with the fact
that they are lost and need with social justice.
To him, evangelism is seeing to it that the hungry are fed, the poor are clothed and housed,
and the sick are provided with proper medical care.
While these are some of the by-products of evangelism, they are not evangelism.

A Life-saving Station

On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur, there was once a little life-saving station.
The building was primitive, and there was just one boat, but the members of the life-saving station
were committed and kept a constant watch over the sea.

When a ship went down, they unselfishly went out day or night to save the lost.
Because so many lives were saved by that station, it became famous.
Consequently, many people wanted to be associated with the station to give their time, talent,
and money to support its important work.

New boats were bought, new crews were recruited, a formal training session was offered.
As the membership in the life-saving station grew, some of the members became unhappy
that the building was so primitive and that the equipment was so outdated.
They wanted a better place to welcome the survivors pulled from the sea.
So they replaced the emergency cots with beds and put better furniture in the enlarged
and newly decorated building.

Now the life-saving station became a popular gathering place for its members.
They met regularly and when they did, it was apparent how they loved one another.
They greeted each other, hugged each other, and shared with one another the events
that had been going on in their lives.

But fewer members were now interested in going to sea on life-saving missions;
so they hired lifeboat crews to do this for them. ... MORE

Observation of an Evangelist
Since February 1975 when God led me to establish the Jerry Drace, Evangelistic Association,
He has allowed me to preach in over 1,000 churches in our nation.
In His divine providence, He has placed me in the company of some of his choicest servants
as well as some who seek to be served.
Throughout the past 31 years, I have kept notes and observations on each of the pastors,
staffs and churches where my team and I have been privileged to present the claims of Christ.
I am sure some of these observations will be misunderstood, others will be embraced.
I wish to share only 13 in hope they will serve as a catalyst for your own reflections.
